If you’ve ever tasted our soft, creamy honey and wondered how it gets that texture—you’re probably enjoying rapeseed honey, one of the earliest and most abundant types of honey harvested in the UK each year.
At Blooming Good Honey, we gently guide this fast-setting honey into a smooth, spreadable consistency using a natural method known as soft setting. Here’s what makes rapeseed honey special, and why we handle it a little differently from other types.
🌾 What Is Rapeseed (Canola) Honey?
Rapeseed, also called oilseed rape in the UK (or canola in other parts of the world), is that sea of bright yellow flowers you often see blooming in fields during spring. Bees absolutely love it—it produces a huge amount of nectar and helps kick-start their season after winter.
Honey made from rapeseed nectar is:
- Very light in colour – often ivory or pale yellow
- Mild in flavour – with a fresh and clean taste
- Quick to crystallise – it can set in just a few days after extraction
🍯 Why Do We Make It Soft Set?
Rapeseed honey naturally contains a high level of glucose, which causes it to crystallise much faster than other types. Left alone, it would set into a rock-hard block…not exactly easy to spread on toast!
To preserve its lovely qualities and make it easier to enjoy, we intentionally guide the crystallisation through a process called soft setting (also known as creaming or controlled crystallisation).
🥄 How We Make Soft Set Honey
Here’s what we do at Blooming Good Honey:
- We seed it: A small amount of finely crystallised “starter” honey is mixed into fresh rapeseed honey.
- We stir it slowly: Over a few days, we gently stir the mixture at cool temperatures. This encourages the honey to crystallise in a controlled, even way.
- We jar it at just the right time: Once the texture is smooth and spreadable, it’s ready to go into jars—creamy, scoopable, and delicious.
No heat. No filtering. No added ingredients. Just a little beekeeper magic.
🍞 How to Enjoy Soft Set Honey
Soft set honey is one of our favourites for everyday eating. It’s:
- Perfect on toast, crumpets, and warm scones
- Delicious in porridge or stirred into yoghurt
- Great for baking or even dolloped onto pancakes
- …or simply eaten by the spoonful!
💛 A Taste of Spring – Naturally Preserved
Soft set honey is a wonderful way to enjoy the early season bounty of spring. Every jar captures the work of thousands of bees foraging those vivid yellow fields of oilseed rape, transformed into something smooth, creamy, and full of subtle flavour.
We never heat or process our honey beyond gentle stirring, so what you taste is the real deal: pure, raw, and proudly made by our bees.
📣 Final Thought
Rapeseed (or canola) honey may set faster than other varieties, but with a little care, it becomes one of the smoothest and most spreadable types of honey available. We love it—and once you try it, you probably will too.
From field to hive to your spoon—enjoy soft set the Blooming Good way.
