A Reluctant Second Generation Beekeeper

“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them”…

…and some inherit a hive of bees

Bees working on a honeycomb frame at Blooming Good Honey, producing 100% pure local honey

Hi, I’m Andrew. Growing up, I never really gave much thought to bees. I was aware that my estranged uncle kept them, but his hobby never piqued my interest. In fact, the idea of thousands of stinging insects was a bit frightening to me…

That all changed in 2019 when, after a sudden decline in health, my uncle passed away, leaving one of his hives abandoned in his backyard. I’ve always been someone who enjoys learning new things, and I didn’t want to see the hive destroyed. After much deliberation, I reluctantly agreed to give beekeeping a try…

What followed was a steep, expensive, and sometimes painful learning curve. But I quickly became a full-fledged convert, falling in love with beekeeping and the incredible world of bees. Today, I’m not only passionate about caring for my hives but also grateful for everything that beekeeping has brought into my life.

Though it’s bittersweet, I now feel closer to my uncle than while he was alive. Beekeeping has given me a deeper understanding of him and his love for the craft, something I never truly appreciated back then.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honey is more than just a sweet treat – it’s a natural powerhouse packed with health benefits. Raw, unprocessed honey, like the one we produce, contains a range of essential nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that contribute to overall health. Here are some of the key health benefits:

Rich in Antioxidants: Honey is a great source of antioxidants, which help to fight free radicals in the body. This can contribute to reducing the risk of chronic diseases and promoting better heart health.

Supports Digestive Health: Honey has natural prebiotic properties, promoting the growth of good bacteria in the gut. This can help maintain a healthy digestive system and improve gut function.

Soothes Sore Throats: Honey has long been used as a remedy for sore throats. It has antibacterial properties that help to fight infections and soothe irritation in the throat.

Boosts Immunity: The antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds found in honey can help to strengthen the immune system, supporting your body’s ability to fight off infections.

Provides Natural Energy: Honey contains a blend of glucose and fructose, which are easily absorbed by the body, providing a quick source of energy. It’s an excellent natural alternative to sugary energy drinks or snacks.

Helps with Skin Health: Honey has moisturizing and healing properties, which make it a popular ingredient in skincare. It can help nourish the skin and is sometimes used in face masks or topical treatments for wounds.

May Aid in Sleep: A spoonful of honey before bed may help promote better sleep. The natural sugars in honey can stimulate the release of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles.

When you choose raw, local honey, you’re getting all these benefits in their purest, most natural form, free from additives and processing.

Honey granulates (or crystallises) naturally over time, and this process is a sign of its purity and quality. The main reasons honey granulates are:

Sugar Content: Honey is primarily made up of two sugars—glucose and fructose. Glucose has a tendency to crystallize, which is why honey with a higher glucose-to-fructose ratio will granulate faster. Different types of honey have varying sugar profiles, which can affect how quickly they granulate.

Moisture Content: Honey with lower moisture content tends to granulate more quickly. Bees regulate the moisture in their honey, but depending on environmental factors like humidity, this can vary.

Storage Conditions: Honey granulates more quickly when stored at cooler temperatures. If honey is stored in a cooler environment (below 18°C/64°F), it may crystallize sooner. Warmer temperatures (above 18°C) can slow down or prevent granulation.

Note: Granulation does not affect the quality or safety of honey. In fact, it is a natural process that indicates the honey has not been heat-treated or processed in any way. If you prefer liquid honey, gently warming the jar in warm water (below 40°C/104°F) can re-liquefy the crystals without damaging its beneficial properties. Simply place the jar in the warm water and stir gently until the honey returns to its runny form.

It’s important to understand the significant differences between supermarket honey and local honey. They are two very different products:

Natural Properties
Like wine, honey harvested from local hives has “terroir,” meaning its texture, flavour, and colour are influenced by the climate, local environment, and the plants visited by the bees. Raw, unprocessed honey naturally granulates (sets) over time, which is a sign of its high quality.

Local Honey
Local honey is mostly produced by small-scale beekeepers who keep bees for the love of the craft. These hobbyists don’t have access to large-scale production methods or discounts, and their honey production is typically a labor of love, with sales often not covering the time and resources invested in bee care.

Supermarket Honey
Mass-produced supermarket honey often comes from countries like China and other non-EU regions. These producers sometimes feed their bees sugar syrup and may even add syrup to the final product. To achieve a consistent taste and texture, supermarket honey undergoes super-fine filtration, heat treatment, and blending from multiple sources. These processes remove the honey’s natural qualities and destroy its beneficial nutritional properties, which is why supermarket honey lacks the health benefits and flavour profile of local, raw honey.

Our honey stands apart from supermarket honey in several key ways. Firstly, it’s 100% raw and unprocessed, maintaining all of its natural goodness and nutritional benefits. Unlike supermarket honey, which is often heat-treated and blended from multiple sources, our honey is produced locally in both Birmingham and Northamptonshire. This means it carries the unique flavours and characteristics influenced by the local climate and the plants our bees visit.

Additionally, our honey is made in small batches by passionate beekeepers who care deeply about the wellbeing of their bees. In contrast, supermarket honey often comes from mass-produced operations, sometimes even imported from countries like China, where bees may be fed sugar syrup. We never add syrups or any other additives—just pure honey as nature intended. This local, ethical approach makes our honey richer in taste, texture, and health benefits, with each jar being a true reflection of its environment.

Our honey is produced in both Birmingham and Northamptonshire. While we started our beekeeping journey in Birmingham, we now also harvest honey in Northamptonshire, where our bees continue to thrive. Each jar captures the essence of these two distinct regions, offering a unique and local taste that reflects the environment and plants the bees visit.

Yes, our honey is 100% pure. It’s sold exactly as produced by the bees, with no additives or artificial ingredients. The only process we apply is cold filtration to remove any impurities, ensuring you receive the honey in its most natural form. This preserves its flavour, texture, and nutritional value, making it as close to nature as possible.

Yes, our honey is 100% raw. Unlike most honey consumed in the UK, which is often imported and heat-processed, our honey is left as natural as possible. We avoid heating our honey to preserve its unique nutritional properties, which can be damaged through heat processing. By choosing raw honey, you’re getting all the health benefits that come with the natural enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. The only process we use is cold filtration, which removes impurities like wax particles without affecting the honey’s integrity.

Bee products are generally not considered suitable for vegans, as they are produced by bees. While we respect vegan choices, our honey is a natural product made by our hardworking bees. We prioritise the health and wellbeing of our bees through sustainable, ethical beekeeping practices. However, for those seeking plant-based alternatives to honey, there are other sweeteners available.

No, never. Our honey is 100% natural, and we don’t add any preservatives. We simply cold filter it to remove any debris, ensuring it stays as pure and wholesome as it was when it was harvested by the bees.

Our honey is harvested with the utmost care and respect for the bees, ensuring the highest quality product. Here’s how we do it:

Bee-Friendly Practices: We prioritize the well-being of our bees by following sustainable and bee-friendly practices. Our hives are placed in natural environments where bees can forage on diverse, local plants, ensuring that the honey produced reflects the true essence of the area.

Monitoring Hive Health: Throughout the beekeeping season, we regularly check the health of our hives to ensure they are thriving. This helps us ensure that the bees are healthy and that they have enough honey to sustain them through the colder months.

Careful Harvesting: When it’s time to harvest, we carefully remove the honeycomb frames from the hive. This is done when the bees have capped the honey, indicating that it is fully ripened and ready for extraction.

Cold Extraction: Once the honeycomb frames are harvested, we gently uncapping the honey cells by hand, ensuring minimal disturbance. The honey is then extracted using a cold method that preserves its natural enzymes and beneficial properties. We never use heat, so all the natural goodness of the honey remains intact.

Filtration: After extraction, we filter the honey to remove any beeswax, pollen, or other debris. We use a cold filter method to keep the honey’s purity, ensuring it stays raw and unprocessed.

Jarring: Finally, the honey is jarred by hand, ready for you to enjoy. Our honey is never altered or mixed with additives, giving you the purest, most authentic product available.

By keeping our process natural and simple, we ensure that every jar of honey reflects the quality of the environment and the care we put into our beekeeping practices.
